For the second model in the Star Wars project I wanted to build a model based on the star wars X Wing Fighter. I began with a simple small rectangle and turned it into an editable poly with segments and started to extrude and bevel the left and right side of each. This allowed me to form the wings of the ship and get started with dragging them out.
Below is a picture of the design I made for my x-wing fighter.
As you can see I have also extruded and bevelled the nose of the ship in order to create the classic shape of the X WING.
At the back of the ship I bevelled and extruded to create the effect of an engine and jet stream kind of thing.
I also did this with the top of the nose at the back to give the effect of a window and cockpit styled effect.
Adding 2 cylinders in and placing them on the X AXIS at 90 degrees allowed me to create the style of 2 missile launchers on either wing.
I wanted the wings to be large and have the missiles on the bottom wings too so I cloned the two cylinders and dragged them down.
To enlarge the wings I selected the polygons shown below and bevelled them out as shown.
The wings were now wide enough and I wanted now to add the laser guns on the end of each wing. To do this I added a cylinder and used inset on the end polygon and then extrude to extend it but smaller. I repeated this step on the newly extended cylinder to get the effect shown below.
Finally I cloned the laser gun and moved it across to the other wing, then cloned both again and moved them down to the bottom wing. Below is my final design.
Below is the effect of the ship I was almost going for.
Using the video below helped me to develop my model.

Continuing with the Patrol Ship
I now had a basic design development for my Patrol Ship and I wanted to add some missile launchers to the wings and colour each part separately.
I added some more extrusion and bevel to various parts of the ship and then created a cylinder to lie at 90 Degrees on the X axis. I then cloned it 3 times and put 2 on each wing. I scaled one on each side down slightly to create the effect shown below.
Here is a closer look.
This is the final design prototype for my Model of a Patrol Ship in star wars based around the Hoth area.
Below is a basic idea of what I based my idea on.
The following video helped me to build my prototype.

First Model Basic Patrol Ship to be flying around the scene
Patrol Ship
For the first model for this assignment i wanted to create a ship that would teach me techniques and help me to get to grips with the 3DS Studio Max software. I chose to use this as i felt alot of the techniques used would then enable me to go onto something more advanced for the following models and the animation task towards the end of the module.
To begin the creation of the ship i was working with a sphere with 14 segments. The other parameters where as follows:
Radius = 3.592
Segments = 14
Smooth = Yes
Hemisphere = 0.0
Chop = Yes
Having now got a sphere and scaled it appropriatly i begin to start manipulating the shape of it to make it look how i wanted. Selcting Edit poly from the right hand Modifier list alowed me to do this. Using the mirror tool within 3DS Max allowed me to work with one side of the ship whilst still keeping the accuracy and miroring of the other side which for the worked perfectly as i wanted a pure semetrical ship.
Shown above is the model so far and as you can see it is starting to look like a spaceship of sorts but just without any texturing or difined colour.
The next post will be advancing on this.
